Disability Insurance - UnumProvident

UnumProvident is one of the leading providers of short-term and long-term disability insurance in the United States. UnumProvident’s subsidiaries are Colonial Life, Provident Life, and Paul Revere. It has previously been accused of failing to pay claims and systematically denied claims for which policyholders should have been covered.

The number of claims denied by UnumProvident has become well publicized. It was the subject of a dateline piece on October 13, 2002. In 2004, UnumProviden Corp. agreed to reassess more than 200,000 disability claims it originally denied since 1997 and change how it handles future claims to settle a multi-state investigation led by insurance regulators from Tennessee, Maine and Massachusetts. The probe, which was joined by all 50 states and the District of Columbia, also found that UnumProvident failed to evaluate the ”totality” of a claimant’s medical condition and placed an ”inappropriate burden” on them to justify their eligibility to collect benefits.
