Having your doctors participate in your SSD case is imperative. Unfortunately, doctors are often reluctant to writing letters and filling out forms on behalf of Social Security Disability Claimants.
Nevertheless, if your doctor, based on his or her treatment of you, believes you are disabled and is willing to support your case in writing, you should ask for a detailed statement to this effect.
Written statements from a your doctor can carry great weight on an initial Social Security Disability or SSI Disability Claim, or subsequent appeal. Such statements should be detailed, as well as substantial. Doctors should set forth your diagnosis or diagnoses, the restrictions that they would place on your ability to return to work, and your prognosis. For example, please set forth how long she can sit and stand, how far she can walk, how much she can lift, whether she can bend or stoop, and/or any limitations that you would place on her physical activities. The Social Security Administration will not accept a statement such as “my patient is totally disabled.”
It is very important to give your doctor a complete history so that your doctor can write an accurate report on your behalf.
